Fun Luis Rengifo Thoughts and Tidbits

comments

1. Rengifo just passed his OPS+ from last season (102) and currently has an OPS+ of 103.

2. Of qualified Angels hitters, he’s third in OBP, only behind the two obvious guys (Ohtani/Trout).

3. He’s played 6 different positions this season, and could theoretically play two others without too much issue if needed (1B, DH). Neither seem likely, but it’s not farfetched to think he could play every position outside of pitcher/catcher.

4. Despite being 3rd in Plate Appearances, recently passing Taylor Ward and behind Shohei and Renfroe, he’s not listed as a starter on Baseball Reference. This is because the position he’s spent the most time at, 2B, has been primarily Brandon Drury’s spot. (584 to 444 innings) At Rengifo’s other most played positions, 3B and SS, he’s stayed stuck behind the injured Rendon and Urshela (for 3B) and behind Neto and Squid (SS), with not enough time to catch up before the season ends.

As an aside, it’s also worth noting that 1B has been a veritable rotating door. Drury has played the most innings there, but he played many more at 2B so he can’t be listed as the starter there. After that, it’s Jared Walsh, then Moose. Moose is 20 innings behind Walsh, but has been starting at 3B. Schanuel is still 118 innings behind Walsh as well (180 to 62), so he needs at least 14 full games to take over the innings lead.

5. Rengifo won his previous arbitration case for the 2023 season and will likely enter arbitration again. He had filed for $2.3M, while the FO proposed $2M. With two solid seasons under his belt now, It’s not crazy to think he’ll ask for at least $7M (less than what Grichuk, Renfroe, Drury, Urshela, Escobar, and Cron were making). Ward is certain to ask for more as well.
