The Los Angeles Angels are spiraling toward their worst season ever, but you won’t find manager Ron Washington sweating about his job. In fact, he’s laser-focused on a different mission altogether.
“I’m not worried about me being let go, and I’m not worried about [general manager Perry Minasian] being let go,” Washington told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Sam Blum. “We’re focused on what we have to do—and that’s get these young kids better.”
With a dismal 28-43 record and a .394 winning percentage, the Angels are dangerously close to eclipsing their franchise low of 406 from 1980. Key injuries to stars like Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon have forced Washington to field a team brimming with untested talent-Nolan Schanuel, Logan O’Hoppe, Zach Neto, Jo Adell, and Mickey Moniak.
Despite owner Arte Moreno’s history of abrupt franchise shifts, Washington remains undeterred. “I’m 72 years old. I’m in my 54th year in the game. I’m not worried about a job,” he said. “I’m here to build, and we’re building. We’re getting better.”
