I’m glad the Angels aren’t making big signings or big trades

comments

I’m glad they haven’t traded any one, least of all their young core, for a quixotic attempt at the postseason this year. I’m glad they haven’t overpaid yet on a big free agent like Snell or Bellinger just to say they got star players. I’m glad they haven’t had a big signing just to appease the folks who want something to happen.

With the new coaching staff coming in, this is a great time to pump the brakes, run with the current roster and assess what they got. If they improve, perhaps they’ll have better chances with FA’s next year when there’s a lot more quality options available. If they tank, next year’s draft class also looks to be better.

And for a more optimistic take, perhaps the lack of inactivity is a sign that they’re preparing to sell sooner than later. This feels fairly similar to how the Mets organization acted before selling to Stearns and who knows how much of a hit the Angels take if/when Bally’s goes under later this year.
