Sup Spud Squad,

Today we’re throwing you the juiciest bits from the diamond, quicker than a fastball down the middle. From surprise managerial shifts to potential mega-deals and late-night award announcements (seriously, MLB, who’s scheduling these?), we’ve got the scoop. Step up to the plate and let’s dive into the world of baseball where strategy, surprises, and the occasional labor-inducing autograph signing await!

AL EAST

Blue Jays
  • The Blue Jays are looking to come back stronger, plug some holes, and make a serious run for the title according to their GM Ross Atkins as reported by The Athletic.

Orioles
  • From baseball’s basement to the penthouse, Mike Elias transformed the Orioles from a 115-loss eyesore to a 101-win masterpiece, earning the MLB Executive of the Year and proving that a little patience and a lot of savvy can turn even the bleakest game around.

Rays
  • The Rays have a whopping 7 players nominated for the All-MLB Team: Relievers Shawn Armstrong, and Pete Fairbanks; starter Zach Eflin; OFs Randy Arozarena, and Josh Lowe; 1B Yandy Diaz; 3B Isaac Paredes. Make sure to get your vote in for your favorite team’s players here, we sure have!

Red Sox

Yankees
  • Brian Cashman, the Yankees’ GM, fiercely defended his team’s strategies against a flood of reporter inquiries. He specifically debunked the idea that the Yankees lean too heavily on analytics, stating that despite a smaller analytics department, it’s only part of their broader decision-making strategy. Yet, the evidence may suggest otherwise, as shown below. Here’s a 20-minute clip of the hour-long conference.

During Tuesday’s press conference, Brian Cashman said the Yankees have the “smallest analytics department” in the American League East. According to @FourRingsSports , as of Aug. 27 of this year, that did not appear to be the case.

AL CENTRAL

Guardians
  • Who knew MLB’s big announcements come with a side of midnight snacks? Dropping the Platinum Glove winner at 11:35 PM on a Friday—seriously, was everyone else asleep at the wheel? Andrés Giménez isn’t just snagging baseballs, he’s snagging awards while we’re all catching Z’s. Talk about a stealth win!

Royals
  • The Kansas City Royals are eyeing a hefty extension for star Bobby Witt Jr., potentially topping $200 million. Inspired by recent mega-deals for other shortstops, the Royals are betting big on Witt to boost both team performance and public support for their new ballpark project.

Tigers
  • Scott Harris and the Tigers are on the hunt for a new ace after Eduardo Rodriguez’s curveball exit. As Rodriguez eyes a bigger deal in free agency, Detroit’s gearing up for a savvy shopping spree, eyeing pitchers like Michael Wacha or Kyle Gibson.

Twins
  • The Twins, fresh off breaking their postseason curse, are now eyeing first base upgrades, with President Derek Falvey open to trades or free-agent signings. Alex Kirilloff is a potential in-house option, but his injury history has the Twins playing it cautiously. With a payroll tighter than a bunt play, they’re weighing options and might shuffle the deck to find the right fit.

White Sox
  • Jason Benetti, the voice of the White Sox, is ditching the White Sox for the Tigers, trading in one struggling team for another with, arguably, better uniforms. He’s leaving behind a trail of disappointed South Side fans and a White Sox organization that’s about as stable as a Chicago weather forecast.

AL WEST

Angels
  • The Angels are going big with Ron Washington at the helm, but it’s like they’re trying to hit a grand slam with a toothpick. Winning’s been a stranger, and they’re banking on Wash to be the game-changer. Washington’s got his work cut out, turning errors into outs.

Astros
  • The Astros’ off-season looks like a tightrope act. GM Dana Brown’s got a wallet that’s squeezing tighter than a pair of skinny jeans. He’s eyeing bullpen and backup catcher fixes, maybe even a third starter, but don’t expect him to splash cash like it’s a rap video.

Athletics
  • Oakland’s Mayor Thao amps up the fight to keep the A’s, rallying fans at City Hall against their Vegas relocation. She’s pushing MLB to vote ‘no’ and keep the team rooted in Oakland, as their lease ends in ’24. It’s a high-stakes tug-of-war for the city’s beloved team.

Mariners
  • Mariners are swinging for contact hitters to cut down on those strikeouts. They’re eyeing Rays’ Yandy Díaz, while keeping tabs on big fish like Soto and Alonso. But don’t bet on them playing their top pitching cards for these deals.

Rangers
  • We know the Rangers just won the World Series and the goal is to do the hardest thing in sports, and that’s repeat. But what we didn’t all know about is this Rangers fan going into labor waiting for an autograph from World Series MVP Corey Seager because hey, priorities, it’s a dash to the hospital in full Rangers gear.

WEEKEND TATERS

Bobby Witt Jr. had his first 30 home run / 30 stolen bases season and was just one stolen base shy of joining Ronald Acuna Jr. in the 30/50 club. Witt is going to be worth every penny and will only get more expensive as time goes on. Here’s all 30 of his Tater’s this year:

We’ll see you tomorrow for our regularly scheduled programming. We hope you have a great Sunday!
