The Perry Minasian Cult of Personality

comments

Perry enjoys a weird cult like status among some Angels fans, particularly on this subreddit. And I have just one question for his followers: why?

I mean all logic and rationale go out the window when it comes to discussion about Perry. Take for example his FA signing track record in the past 3 years. It’s not very good in all honestly, yet his followers insist that this isn’t his fault, going so far as to say that he’s never made a bad signing in his life, every single one was good on paper, the players just didn’t perform!

This is a literal fanboy take. Putting aside that these guys are judged on results, some of his moves really did not look good on paper. But when you try to discuss this his fanbase loses their minds.

Or take discussion about his draft picks for example. Someone legit tried to say that Perry’s drafts were miles better than Eppler’s by citing….. Joyce, Shanuel, and Bauchman…..Who’ve played like 20 games combined….. 🤦‍♂️

All in all, I just don’t get it. Perry seems like an okay GM, but I really don’t understand how he’s warranted the cult like following he has. I mean in 3 years with Trout and Ohtani he hasn’t been able to put together a winning season. He’s whiffed on most his signings and trades. The farm still sucks. According to our pitchers and pitching staff, his organizational philosophy is responsible for the team-wide pitching failure this year. Furthermore he hired a hitting coach those philosophy is the exact opposite of what the analytics recommend (generally speaking it’s better to swing less, not more. Including at strikes, hitters have better run value when they take strikes. The exact opposite of Thames approach).

So what gives? Why is any criticism of Perry dismissed with absolute nonsense arguments? Why is there such a cult following surrounding the man? I really want to know where and when this started, and why. Because I just don’t get it.
