The tweet above shows how many lineup combinations each team has used this year and the number of games for their most common lineup. The Angels have used 123 order combos through 132 games and haven’t fielded the same lineup more than 3 times. This is the most commonly-used Angels lineup in 2023, which has only been used in August:
- Luis Rengifo
- Shohei Ohtani
- Brandon Drury
- Mike Moustakas
- C.J. Cron
- Mickey Moniak
- Hunter Renfroe
- Matt Thaiss
- Randal Grichuk
For fun, I went back and looked at how many lineups the Angels have used over the last few years:
2022 – 153 combos, 2 games for most common lineup
2021 – 151 combos, 2 games for most common lineup
2020 – 52 combos in 60 games, 3 games for most common lineup
2019 – 153 combos, 2 games for most common lineup
2018 – 132 combos, 4 games for most common lineup
2017 – 116 combos, 12 games for most common lineup
Due to injuries/platoons/inconsistency/etc., the Angels haven’t had a “go-to” lineup since 2017. That lineup, by the way, was the following:
- Brandon Phillips*
- Mike Trout
- Justin Upton
- Albert Pujols
- Kole Calhoun*
- Andrelton Simmons
- Luis Valbuena
- C.J. Cron
- Martin Maldonado
*They also had a 5-game lineup in 2017 that flipped Phillips and Calhoun with everything else the same.
