Stats that Ohtani leads MLB/AL in (and why he isn’t shutting down)

comments

He currently leads MLB outright in the following categories:

(Batting categories)

HR (44)

Slugging (.672)

OPS (1.084)

Extra-base hits (76)

Total bases (317)

IBB (18)

Isolated power (.364)

AB/HR (10.73)

Tied for MLB lead in triples (8)

(Pitching categories)

Opponents’ batting average (.184)

If you also include sabermetrics he leads in WAR (9.8 per ESPN or 8.7 per FanGraphs) and a slew of others like wRAA, wRC, wOBP, and wRC+.

Additionally he leads the AL in the following categories as well as those above:

(Batting categories)

Runs (100)

BB (83)

OBP (.412)

(Pitching categories)

BABIP (.240)

Anyway, one reason why Ohtani might not be shutting down for the rest of the season and having surgery now is that he would probably be overtaken in at least some of those categories if he were to do so. He’s having what might be a career season at the plate after all.
