TLDR; He is a below average to average GM based on his trades, drafts and roster construction.
One thing that surprises me a lot is the hard on for Perry, most ppl on this sub has. I am trying to understand if I miss something u folks are seeing. So let’s start with the good, bad and ugly.
The good :
O’hoppe trade(he has potential and shown what he can do, still untested in multiple seasons whether the performance will persist or get better)
Moustakas trade
Gio Urshela
Brandon drury
Zach Neto draft
Estevez
chase silseth – not proven and not sure if sustainable but adding it to good column
The Bad:
Hunter Renfroe – not performing to his past performances,
Detmers and Sandoval inconsistency – they both have potential to be good; but too inconsistent. For detmers I believe we have brought him to majors too early
Rift with Maddon and the firing
Not re-signing Cobb even when he wanted to stay, was a good mentor to young pitchers
The Ugly:
Ryan Tepera
Aaron Loup
Anderson
Quintana
Velasquez – don’t know why we keep playing this dude
Farm hasn’t improved
Bringing guys up to majors too early, before their bodies are conditioned to the workloads of majors causing injuries and potentially damaging careers – look ohoppe, Neto, Bachman, Joyce. I don’t think it’s bad luck- they are not ready
Despite relying on *analytics* no improvement to angels win-loss record(this season we got lucky due to change in games vs all league instead of playing 17 games vs Astros, also season is not yet over we might still be 10 games below .500 with many strong tea,so yet to be played)
Summary:
Looking at the big picture, Angels are still no good from before despite having Prime Ohtani for his tenure.
Also his good are all not proven especially the young guys- whether they will be consistent or pull a Fletcher after a couple. None of his signings, drafts I see are MVP worthy, average at best and a potential to be below average looking at their Babi or other metrics(Moniak).
so why the hard on for him?
